When it\u2019s time to\nretire a server, it pays to have a solid plan in place. Many data centers are\nused for heavily regulated fields. Auditors check records for decommissioning\ncompliance. When a server is removed from service the process must be\ndocumented with decommissioning documents. The following steps can be used as a\nserver decommissioning checklist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Identify and Record<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Find the servers in\nyour facility that needs to be decommissioned. Record all necessary information\nand schedule the decommission. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Create a Log<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Develop a comprehensive\nlog of all actions performed during server decommissioning. It\u2019s important that\nevery step and compliance has been well-documented in preparation for potential\naudits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Locate all Software\nLicenses<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Locate and retain any\nand all software licenses for the servers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Terminate Contracts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The server scheduled\nfor decommissioning, any vendor maintenance for the associated hardware or\nsoftware will be unnecessary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Backups All Data<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 It\u2019s likely that\nthere will be information within the server that needs to be retained. Create a\nbackup, and verify that all data was successfully backed up prior to\ndecommissioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Wipe Data<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you plan to utilize\ndata erasure software, this should be done while the servers are still within\nits rack. Be sure to follow\u2019s all instructions from your chosen tool. The\nprimary benefit of data wiping is that erased data is unrecoverable and therefore\nmore secure than alternative methods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Unplug the Server<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disconnect the server\nfrom the network, then remove all subnets, access control lists (ACLs), and\nfirewalls. These processes can be quite complex and even lead to complications\nfor your greater network, so be sure to work with Expert partners that can\nassist with each step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Cut Power and Remove<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Power down the servers\nand remove it from its rack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Destroy Server<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019ve chosen to\nforego the use of data wiping software, you will need to physically destroy the\nstorage systems of your server via shredding, degaussing, or another approved\nmethod of destruction. It will be beneficial to work with an experienced ITAD\nfor this process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. Pack and Remove<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s time to place the\nserver on a pallet and remove it from your facility. This can be done in a few\nways depending on your plan for the server. Your organization could repurpose\nthe equipment, sell it, or dispose of it in some other fashion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11. Coordinate with Other Departments<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reach out to every department within your organization that needs to be kept in the loop about the decommissioning process.
